Life

Little is known about Kamila Rosenbaumová's life. She had worked as a dancer and was arrested by the German occupying forces during the Second World War after the rest of the Czech Republic was broken up in March 1939 because of her Jewish faith . On February 22, 1942, she was deported from Kladno on Transport Y to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. There she lovingly looked after the smallest prisoners, as one of the inmates remembered. In addition, Rosenbaumová set up the choreography for Hans Krása's children's opera Brundibár and led his own small stage company on site. Born in Vienna, she was also involved in Karel Švenk's stage productions. The dancer and choreographer was deported to Auschwitz on October 23, 1944 on one of the last transports . In view of her good physical condition, she survived the stress of the camp and was moved back to Theresienstadt at the beginning of 1945 . There she experienced the liberation in May 1945 and then returned to Prague. Karla Rosenbaumová died there on July 26, 1988, just before her 80th birthday.
