Game flow

Starting position for Kamisado
A sumo figure: a dragon tower marked with a dragon tooth

The game is played on a chessboard-like playing field with 64 fields, which are marked in eight different colors according to a specific pattern. Each of the two players, black and white, has eight pieces, which are designed as a dragon tower and each of which has one of the eight colors of the game board. At the beginning each player positions his playing pieces on a base side of the square playing field, the colored markings of the playing pieces corresponding to those of the fields.

For a move, each player can move one of his pawns either forward or diagonally without jumping over other pawns. The color of the playing field on which a move ends determines the color of the opposing playing figure with which he must make his next move. The black player begins by choosing any of his eight pieces and moving them forward or diagonally. The winner is the player who was the first to move one of his pawns onto a space on the opposing baseline.

A kamisado game can also be played over several games. For this purpose, after each game, the pawn that has reached the opponent's base line is marked with a so-called dragon tooth. Playing figures with one or more dragon teeth have additional rights in subsequent games and are called sumos . Under certain conditions you can push back opposing pawns with a “sumo push”. Sumo figures score points, the number of points depending on the number of dragon teeth they are awarded with. The Kamisado game ends when a player reaches a predetermined number of points. Variants with 3, 7 and 15 necessary points are described in the instructions.
