With an area of around 2.5 km², Kampenwerder is the largest island in the Schaalsee .

location

The inhabited island is located in northern Germany in the Schaalsee and until June 13, 2004 belonged to the municipality of Lassahn . This was incorporated into the newly founded town of Zarrentin am Schaalsee , which is located in western Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The island is a good three kilometers long and up to 1.6 kilometers wide. It has a surface of up to 2.5 km². The highest point is at 56.3 meters above sea level. and is therefore a good 21 meters above the level of the Schaalsee, which is about 35 meters high. Kampenwerder is connected to the Mecklenburg landscape to the east by a narrow land bridge.

history

The first settlement of the island is not mentioned in a document, but since the Middle Ages the island has been owned by the Stintenburg estate , whose masters used large parts of the island for agriculture.

The island is connected to the neighboring island of Stintenburg Island by an artificially created dam . The road connection running over this dam continues via a dam / road connection to the "mainland" at Lassahn.

During the GDR era, the island was an absolute restricted area due to its close proximity to the inner-German border .

today

The island, inhabited by around 30 people, is now a popular destination in the Schaalsee holiday region.

The largest area in the eastern part of the island is used for agriculture, while the rather flat shore zones in the north, west and south are predominantly tree-lined and partly merge into reed belts.

Kampenwerder is part of the Schaalsee biosphere reserve .
