Cana (Galilee)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kana (also Kanaa ) was a historical place in Galilee in the Middle East .

Cana in the Bible

In the New Testament , Cana is the scene of the wedding at Cana , which is only told in the Gospel of John ( Jn 2 : 1–12  EU ). According to the Johannine account, Jesus performed his first miracle here by turning a large amount of water into wine .

In addition, after the Gospel of John, Jesus was later in Cana again ( Jn 4,46-53  EU ). Also Nathanael , one of the disciples of Jesus is said to have originated in Cana ( Jn 21,2  EU ).

Location of the historical place

The exact location of Cana cannot be easily deduced from the New Testament information. Several traditions and guesses have formed as to where the place might have been.

Chirbet Qana / Kenet-el-Jalil

Chirbet Qana or Kenet-el-Jalil is 14 km north of Nazareth on the northern edge of the Asochis plain . From the time of the Crusaders to the end of the 16th century, this place was identified with the biblical Cana in Galilee. More recently, this localization has been followed again for topographical and linguistic reasons.

Kafr Kanna

Kafr Kanna is a village eight kilometers northeast of Nazareth. In Kafr Kanna, the claim to identity with the New Testament location is underlined by the Roman Catholic " wedding church ", which stands at the point where the miracle is said to have taken place. This church was built in 1883 on the site of a ruined mosque , under the floor of which there was a mosaic of a synagogue that was built in the 5th century at the earliest. There is also a Greek Orthodox wedding church in Kafr Kanna , and a "House of Nathanael" is shown there. However, the initial sound and pronunciation of the name do not match the New Testament spelling, so this localization is less likely.
