List of domestic dogs

The Canaan Dog (Engl. Canaan Dog ) is one of the FCI recognized dog breed from Israel ( . FCI Group 5, Section 6, Standard No. 273 ).

History of the breed

The development of the breed began by Rudolphina Menzel, who emigrated from Austria to Palestine (later Israel) in 1934 . She collected bedouin dogs living in the wild and started a breeding program. She named the breed after the biblical land of Canaan and created a breed standard that was used by the Breeding Association of Israel and on the basis of which the breed was finally recognized by the FCI in 1966. An information material from the FCI about the breed can be seen that Canaan dogs lived exclusively as pariah dogs until the 1930s , of which dogs were often used for breeding the breed until the 1980s. Since then, it has been difficult to find suitable wild dogs. The breeders assume that today's breed largely corresponds to what dogs have lived in the wild in this area for thousands of years and are adapted to life under natural conditions there.

description

The Canaan dogs reach a shoulder height ( height at the withers ) of 50 to 60 cm, males can be considerably larger than bitches. Depending on gender and size, the dogs of this breed can reach a weight of 18 to 25 kg.

The coat is dense, strong and smooth, short to medium length and with a dense and abundant undercoat . The breed's coat color ranges from sand to reddish brown, white, black, or spotted, with or without a mask . For dogs with a mask, it must be symmetrical. Desert sand colors, gold, red, and cream colors are typical of the breed. Unwanted colors according to the breed standard are black with brown (black and tan), gray, brindle and three-colored.

The physique is square. This dog carries its tail set high and rolled over its back. His nose is black. The eye color is dark brown. The eyes are slightly slanted and almond-shaped.

Essence

In the breed standard, the Canaan dog is described as lively, quick to react, suspicious of strangers, and ready to defend, but not naturally aggressive. The ideal Canaan dog should therefore be vigilant not only towards humans, but also towards other animals. In addition, the standard describes the ideal dogs of the breed as extraordinarily devoted to their master and easy to train.
