Kanakanahalli Ramachandra

Kanakanahalli Ramachandra (born August 18, 1933 in Mandya ; † January 17, 2011 ) was an Indian mathematician who dealt with number theory .

life and work

K. Ramachandra was thirteen years old when his father died. He had to look for a job and, like his father, worked as a clerk at Minerval Mills. He studied at Central College in Bangalore and then taught at the BMS College of Engineering. In his free time in college he studied number theory, modeled on Srinivasa Ramanujan , which he studied from Godfrey Harold Hardy's book on Ramanujan's work. From 1958 he continued his studies at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay ( Mumbai ) with K. Chandrasekharan and received his doctorate in 1965 with KG Ramanathan at the University of Mumbai. From 1965 until his retirement in 1995 he was at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and then until his death in 2011 at the National Institute for Advanced Studies in Bangalore.

In 1970/71 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton with Atle Selberg .

In number theory, he was particularly concerned with analytical number theory ( Riemann's zeta function ) and the theory of transcendent numbers (independently of Serge Lang , he proved the Six exponentials theorem ). As a mathematician who influenced him, he valued Ivan Matwejewitsch Vinogradov the highest and was twice in the Soviet Union to conferences in his honor.

In 1978 he founded the Hardy-Ramanujan Journal of the Hardy-Ramanujan Society and was its editor.

From 2007 to 2010 he was President of the Calcutta Mathematical Society. In 1997 he received the Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal.

He has the Erdös number 1, because he published with Paul Erdős when he was his guest in India in 1976.

His students included TN Shorey and R. Balasubramanian .
