K. Chandrasekharan ( Komaravolu Chandrasekharan ; born November 21, 1920 in Machilipatnam , Andhra Pradesh ; † April 13, 2017 in Zurich ) was an Indian mathematician who studied analysis and number theory.

Life

Chandrasekharan went to school in Bapatla in the Guntur district and studied at the Presidency College in Chennai , where he received his master's degree and received his doctorate from K. Ananda Rau (who was previously with S. Ramanujan in Cambridge in England) in 1945, while at the same time from 1940 to 1943 worked as a research scholar at the University of Madras . He was then from 1946-1949 at the Institute for Advanced Study and then Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay , where he expanded the mathematics department into a leading research center worldwide and invited leading scientists such as Laurent Schwartz and Carl Ludwig Siegel there To give lectures. Problems with the physicist Homi Jehangir Bhabha led him to move to ETH Zurich in 1965 , where he also retired in 1988.

Chandrasekharan dealt with, among other things, Fourier series , trigonometric sums in analytic number theory and the geometry of numbers .

From 1955 to 1961 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union and he was also its secretary from 1961 to 1966 and its president from 1971 to 1974. From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Indian Cabinet. From 1963 to 1966 he was Vice President of the International Council of Scientific Unions and from 1966 to 1970 its Secretary General. He was editor of the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society.

In 1959 he received the Padma Shri and in 1959 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize . In 1966 he received the Ramanujan Medal. He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 1975 he was elected an external member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences .

His PhD students include MS Narasimhan and Raghavan Narasimhan .
