Gate to the Jakobskirche Kanaker

Kanaker ( Armenian Քանաքեռ ) is a former village in Armenia , which today forms part of the Yerevan district of Kanaker-Sejtun [z-] ( Քանաքեռ-Զեյթուն ) in the northeast of the capital. Due to the urban development of Yerevan, the village gradually became part of the city.

The village had several churches which, like the whole village, were destroyed in an earthquake with an epicenter in Garni in 1679. The oldest church in Kanaker today is the Jakobskirche (Surp Hakop), which was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1679. The Church of the Holy Mother of God (Surp Astvatsatsin) from 1695 on a hill in the northwest is of almost the same appearance . The Russian Orthodox Church of the Care of Our Lady was built in Kanaker in 1912.
