Jakobskirche Kanaker
The Jakobskirche Kanaker or Surb Hakob ( Armenian Քանաքեռի Սուրբ Հակոբ եկեղեցի , Kanakeri Surb Hakob jekeghezi ) is a church in the Armenian capital Yerevan , which dates back to the 17th century. It belongs to the Diocese of Ararat of the Armenian Apostolic Church and is located in the Kanaker-Sejtun district of Yerevan .
architecture
The church is a three-aisled basilica without a dome with a gable roof , on which there is a small bell tower with a pointed dome on the side . The main entrance, decorated with stone carvings, is in the middle of the three arches on the west side of the church, where three khachkars from 1504, 1571 and 1621 are also attached. Further entrances to the church are on the south and north walls. Inside the church there are several wall paintings with images of saints on the walls and the columns standing in two rows. The main altar and the two sacristies are on the eastern inner wall.
In front of the church there is an ornate gate to the southwest, which was built in 1887.
history
At the site of today's church there was a previous building that was destroyed in an earthquake with an epicenter in Garni in 1679. A wealthy Armenian citizen of Tbilisi named Hakobjan donated the money to rebuild the church, which was completed in 1679. In the 19th century the church was the bishopric , and in 1868 the diocese opened a school on the church grounds, named after Saint Sahak Partew and headed by the archimandrite Mesrop Smbatjanz. During the Soviet era , the church was closed and served as a warehouse. It reopened as a church in 1990.
