Channel 4 (North Rhine-Westphalia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KANAL 4 -Rundfunkgesellschaft in Nordrhein-Westfalen mbH was an independent television station founded by the North Rhine-Westphalian film and video scene at the end of 1987 .

Peter Kleinert from the KAOS film and video team , Joachim Ortmanns from Lichtblick Film- und Fernsehproduktion in Cologne, Dieter Zeppenfeld from Magenta Videoproduktion in Aachen, the youth film club Cologne , the Medienzentrum Ruhr in Essen, Sascha Schäfer from "Krankenhausfernsehen Ibbenbüren" and Klaus Keuter, former editor of the trade union newspaper Welt der Arbeit were the initiators.

KANAL 4 owes its existence to a clause in the State Broadcasting Treaty , more precisely in the State Broadcasting Act of North Rhine-Westphalia , which regulated the approval of the first private broadcasters in addition to public broadcasters. After that, the private television operators, if they achieved a technical market share of more than ten percent, had to give up part of their broadcasting time as an "open channel" for reports from the country's cultural scene, which were created by independent initiatives such as KANAL 4 . As a result, from 1988 onwards, thanks to KANAL 4, the private channels RTL and Sat.1 also showed socially critical magazines, political documentaries and talk shows as well as satire and music programs.

In the KANAL 4 series Vor Ort on February 11, 1989, the squatters of the autonomous center at Weißhausstrasse were able to represent their political positions on RTL . After the presentation of Super 8 films from the underground scene in the GDR , RTL tried in vain to terminate the contract it had imposed with Kanal 4 . The broadcast of some programs could only be enforced in court.

KANAL 4 presented the first recording of the Cologne Stunksitzung in 1990 (it was only then that it was also regularly broadcast by WDR ). In 1998 the State Broadcasting Treaty was changed, "open channels" abolished.

The music show KANAL 4 Keynote, moderated by Trini Trimpop (later together with Hilko Meyer ), presented numerous concert recordings and interviews from the fields of rock, heavy metal, hip-hop, reggae and electronic music from 1993.

Channel 4's programs were announced by its own logo, a sewer rat digging its way through a labyrinth to number 4.
