Candelabra Linden by Dorla
The candelabra linden tree from Dorla , a district of Gudensberg in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse , is a natural monument . It stands on the edge of the cemetery on Alte Frankfurter Strasse. Before its massive trimming in July 2015, it was unique in Hesse because of its total of eleven so-called “candles” .
The tree
At a height of 0.5 m, the central trunk of the tree has a circumference of 6.78 m and a diameter of 2.15 m. The tree was 22 m high and the crown diameter was 15 m (data from 2006). Around the strong central trunk there are now six (previously probably seven) branches from which a total of ten so-called "candles" grow up. Until 1965 the branches were supported by wooden blocks and scaffolding; then they were secured from the central trunk with tension ropes .
history
The age of this "guided lime tree " is estimated to be more than 500 years. The tree was once a dance and court linden tree and was the center of the village even before the current cemetery was laid out in 1629. The Vogt of the Merxhausen State Hospital , to whom the village had belonged since 1535, held his court days there at least twice a year until 1802.
The so-called “guided linden trees” were drawn in trellises and support frames and were given their characteristic current shape through frequent cuts . The candelabra -shaped multi - topped shape of a tree is called "candelabra trunk" (see candelabra linden ).
Support
On July 9, 2015, the tree was trimmed to a height of only about 5 m due to very strong fungal infestation and dangerous standing uncertainty. It is hoped that the remaining stumps will be preserved for a long time to come.
