Kansas South Western Railway ( AAR reporting as mark: KSW) was a Class 3 - railway company in the state of Kansas in the United States , based in Wichita .

history

The rail company was founded in 1991 as a subsidiary of the railroad holding company Chicago West Pullman Transportation to carry out freight services on several previous routes of the Missouri Pacific Railroad . The following routes were initially leased from the Union Pacific Railroad (successor to the MP) from April 14, 1991: Wichita - Hutchinson - Geneso (140 km), Wichita - Anthony - Hardtner (153 km) and Conway Springs - Kingman - Radium (154 km) km). The route Olcott - Iuka (32 km) could not be driven due to legal disputes. With the merger of Chicago West Pullman Transportation and Railco. Inc of the Broe Group to OmniTRAX , this railway company also changed hands.

In 1998 the routes were acquired. In the following years all other routes were closed except for the line to Geneso and the section to Conway Springs of the line to Hardtner. In April 2000, the company merged into the Central Kansas Railway . In June 2001 Watco Companies acquired this company and continued it as the Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad .

Infrastructure

Transitions existed to the Union Pacific Railroad in Wichita and Geneseo, to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in Wichita and Hutchinson. The most important transport goods were grain, fertilizers, agricultural products and chemicals. In the mid-1990s, 35,000 freight wagons were transported annually.

In 1996 the company owned eleven locomotives (three EMD GP7 , eight EMD GP9 ). Some of the locomotives came from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad .
