The cantonal referendum “More for the bike” was a referendum in the Swiss canton of Lucerne that took place on February 13, 2011. The content of the vote was a change in the law, which obliges the canton to take all necessary measures to double the cantonal traffic of bicycles ( Swiss-German: Velo ) within the next ten years.

Background and content

To promote bicycle traffic, the Pro Velo and VCS associations , the Velociped company and the political parties of the Greens , Young Greens , SP and Juso founded an initiative committee. Together they submitted a popular initiative on April 27, 2009 , the aim of which was to double the proportion of bicycle traffic in the canton. Even if the submitted initiative did not provide for a specific change in the law on the measures, the committee recommended the following to achieve the goal:

  • Make places where there is a risk of accidents safer
  • to expand the bike routes and parking spaces
  • promote the use of bicycles through tax deduction options
  • To run motivational campaigns in schools
  • more funding for bike and ride to provide
  • To support companies that operate a bicycle subsidy

On September 13, 2010, the Cantonal Council spoke out against the initiative because, in its view, enough has already been done to promote cycling and a statutory regulation is not necessary. There was a referendum on February 13, 2011.

Voting result

The initiative was rejected by all Lucerne constituencies . At around 30%, the difference between the lowest percentage of yes votes in the Entlebuch constituency (20.92%) and the highest in the Lucerne City constituency (48.5%) was relatively high. In general, urban areas were more likely to vote for the initiative than rural areas. In the entire canton, the initiative achieved a turnout of around 50% and was rejected with around 35% yes votes.
