Kanwal Sethi

Kanwal Sethi (* 1971 in Amritsar ) is an Indian - German director and screenwriter .

Life

Kanwal Sethi was born in Amritsar, North India in 1971. He discovered his passion for film and theater early on. While still in India he founded a theater group and played with it on several stages of independent theaters. At the same time, Sethi wrote for literary and film magazines. In 1992 he moved to Germany. He studied politics and economics at the TU Dresden . He later moved to Leipzig , where he realized his own stage productions and began realizing the first film projects. After a few short and documentary films, he made his feature film debut in 2011 with Fernes Land , which thematizes the encounter between Pakistani Haroon, who lives illegally in Germany, and the insurance agent Mark, who wants to leave the country. The film premiered at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival .

2017/2018 was in Mumbai his next feature film Love in Mumbai - Once Again with Shefali Shah and Neeraj Kabi in the lead roles. In this first part of a planned trilogy about modern and urban India, Sethi tried above all to capture the feeling of loneliness .

In addition to his artistic activity, Sethi is also a political activist and is involved in various initiatives. In February 2017, he won a lawsuit against two federal police officers for unlawful identification ( racial profiling ) in 2014.
