Delportshoop ( Afrikaans ), also Tsineng and Dekgathlong ( Setswana ), is a South African place in the municipality of Dikgatlong , Frances Baard District in the Northern Cape Province . It is located about 26 miles northwest of Barkly West . In 2011 Delportshoop had 4788 inhabitants in 1155 households. The two districts Tidimalo and Proteahof are located east of the older settlement core and were planned as a township with a buffer zone.

history

The place Delportshoop lies at the confluence of the Vaal with the Harts and originated from a camp of diamond seekers . The place name is due to the person who first found diamonds here. The area was officially declared a prospective area in 1871. However, a village administration was not established until 1931 and in 1970 Delportshoop was granted municipal status.

In Setswana , the Tswana language, there are two names for the place, each with several slightly different variants. These are Tsineng (Tsining, Tsening, Tsenin and Tsoneng) and Dekgathlong (Dekhathlong, Dekatlong, Dekgathlong, Dikgatlhong, Likatlong and Likhatlhong). The name Dekgathlong means "meeting place", which is aimed at the confluence of the Vaal and Harts.

Diamonds have been found in the sediments along the Vaal since 1869. The search extended particularly downstream between Windsorton , Barkly West and Delportshoop. In 1870 negotiations between Boer politicians and representatives of the Griqua led to the emigration of these population groups and the administration of the Orange Free State proclaimed the area their territory.

particularities

Archaeological excavations between Delportshoop and Barkly West have unearthed relics from the Old Paleolithic , the age of which is estimated to be around 2.3 million years. This would make this site one of the oldest with paleoanthropogenic evidence in South Africa.

economy

Delportshoop's water treatment plant is connected to the Vaal Gamagara Regional Water Supply Scheme managed by Sedibeng Water . In addition, the location is included in the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme .

traffic

Delportshoop can be reached by land via the R31 regional road from Kimberley (63 km) or via the R370 from Warrenton (84 km). The N8 and N12 national roads run through Kimberley . Near the village is the Borrelskop stop on the Kimberley – Barkly West – SishenHotazel railway .
