Barkly West ( Afrikaans : Barkly-Wes ) is the seat of the municipality Dikgatlong in the Frances Baard district in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the city had 8,258 inhabitants.
Barkly West is northwest of Kimberley . In 1869 it was founded as Klip Drift . After the discovery of diamonds , it was assigned to what was then the colony of Griqualand West and the name was changed to Barkly West. Like Barkly East , the town is named after Henry Barkly , who was governor of the Cape Colony from 1870 to 1877 .
