Barkly East is a city in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in the Senqu parish in Joe Gqabi District , of which it is the administrative seat.

Barkly East has about 9,986 residents (2011 census). IsiXhosa and Sesotho are most commonly spoken. The city is located south of Lesotho in the southern foothills of the Drakensberg and is one of the highest cities in South Africa. The Langkloofspruit, a tributary of the Kraai River , which is in turn a tributary of the Oranje , flows through Barkly East.

The average rainfall is 567 mm, most of which falls in summer.

history

Barkly East was founded in 1873 and named after the then Governor of the Cape Colony , Sir Henry Barkly. To distinguish it from the town of Barkly West , which also belonged to the Cape Colony, it was called Barkly East.

Economy and Transport

The main source of income is sheep farming. In addition, winter sports are practiced in the area north of Barkly East, for example in the Tiffindell ski area .

Barkly East is on the R58 between Lady Gray in the northwest and Elliot in the southeast and on the R396, which runs across it from Indwe to near Mount Fletcher . Barkly East was the terminus of the Aliwal North – Barkly East railway line , which was closed in 2001.
