Timothy Vincent "Tim" Johnson (born July 23, 1946 in Urbana , Illinois ) is an American politician . From 2001 to 2013 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tim Johnson attended Urbana High School and studied at the United States Military Academy at West Point until 1964 . After studying law at the University of Illinois College of Law and admission to the bar, he began practicing the profession. He also worked in the real estate industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1971 and 1975 he was a member of the Urbana City Council; from 1976 to 2000 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives .

In the 2000 congressional elections , Johnson was elected to the 15th constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Thomas W. Ewing on January 3, 2001 . After five re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2013. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place during this period . Johnson was most recently a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Transport and Infrastructure Committee and a total of five sub-committees. He was also a member of five Congressional Caucuses .

On April 5, 2012, Johnson announced his retirement from Congress. His successor in the 15th district was after a restructuring of the districts John Shimkus .
