Hotazel is a small town in the municipality Joe Morolong Local Municipality , District John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality of Northern Cape in South Africa . It is 61 kilometers northwest of Kuruman . In 2011 the city had 1,756 inhabitants. The place got its name after a former farm, Hotazel is derived from the English Hot as Hell , "hot as hell".

economy

Hotazel has achieved great importance through manganese ore mining in its vicinity. In the nearby Black Rock Area , the world's largest and richest manganese ore deposits are used for extensive mining.

Due to the growing need for workers in the nearby mining industry, systematically designed housing developments are being created in the area.

Transport links

A few kilometers north of Hotazel, a railway line begins at Black Rock for the transport of ore from the Kalahari Manganese Field to various domestic processing sites , for example in Cato Ridge , and ore ports in South Africa. The relevant ore exports go to the Port Elizabeth manganese terminal in the port of Port Elizabeth and the port of Durban .

As a result of the expansion of the line by the state-owned railway company Transnet , manganese ores are increasingly being transported from the mines in the Hotazel region via electrified connections via the Manganese corridor with the Transnet Freight Rail trains to the deep-water port of Ngqura on the coast of the Indian Ocean .

Road connections exist with two main roads to the national network. The R31 , which runs from Rietfontein on the border with Namibia , takes you from Hotazel to Kuruman and on to Kimberley . Furthermore, coming from the border with Botswana in the north, the R380 leads south to Sishen and from there to Postmasburg , where there is a domestic airport.
