The Cape Hartree is a cape on the south coast of Laurie Iceland in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It forms the southwestern tip of the Mossman Peninsula and marks the western boundary of the entrance to Buchan Bay .
It was discovered and roughly mapped in 1821 by the British sealer captain George Powell (1794-1824) on the Dove and the American navigator Nathaniel Palmer on the Hero . The name of the cape first appears on a map Powell published in 1822. The name remained unchanged until 1905. The namesake is unknown. A cartographic survey was also carried out by participants in the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition , led by William Speirs Bruce in 1903. Bruce named it Cape McVitie after Robert McVitie Jr. (1854-1910), Edinburgh biscuit maker and sponsor of the expedition. Since then, the names Cape McVitie , Cape Vitie or misspelled derivatives of the same can be found on some maps as an alternative to the original name .
