from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietmar Schmale (* 1967 in Rheine ) is a German conceptual artist . He also operates under the pseudonym Do. Cheap .

life and work

Dietmar Schmale studied medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1988 . In 1998 he moved to the AKI in Enschede to study fine arts. From 2000 to 2001 Schmale was a guest student at the Art Academy in Münster with Timm Ulrichs .

On the occasion of the Regionale 2004 , Schmale showed the sculpture “ Cum grano salis ”. It is about 20 tons of salt, which was grouped in blocks in the park of the saline Gottesgabe in Rheine. Associations with a dolmen or megalithic grave are obvious.

A long-term performance consisted in Schmale taking up the stereotype of the “Polish cleaning lady” in 2009 in order to put himself as a counterpart in the role of the “German cleaning man”. For the customary Polish wages, Schmale worked ten days as a cleaner in Danzig . The documentation of this performance is entitled Restitution - cultural exchange / Restytucja - wymiana kulturalna and was presented in the City Gallery of Danzig. Schmale cites the performance artist Tehching Hsieh as an artistic role model.

A long-term project by Schmale is a room installation with books with the word “art” in the title. The books are stuck in wooden boxes and can no longer be read. They are neither a picture, nor furniture, nor a sculpture. The art of saying goodbye to the concept of art is an artist's book.

A series of photo works are Narrow Mandalas made of surgical cutlery, amputation saw, scalpel and similar equipment from 2011 and 2012.

Dietmar Schmale is a member of the BBK and the Welbergener Kreis artist community.
