Cape Sheffield is a cape that forms the northwestern extension of Rugged Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . At the same time, it limits the entrance to New Plymouth Bay to the southwest .
The cape is named after the sealer captain James Pendleton Sheffield (1793 - unknown), who operated with the brig Hersilia from Stonington as the first US-American known by name from 1819 to 1820 and 1820 to 1821 in the waters around the South Shetland Islands.
