The Cape Verde barn owl ( Tyto detorta ) is a species from the genus of barn owls that occurs only on the Cape Verde islands . It has long been considered a subspecies of the barn owl , but is viewed as an independent species in more recent literature. It is considered rare; as an endemic species, its population is particularly endangered by habitat destruction and the use of pesticides.

features

The Cape Verde Barn Owl reaches a body length of 35 centimeters. It is somewhat darker than the barn owl, which is also common in Central Europe. The teardrop-shaped, black-rimmed spots on the wings of the hand are characteristic. The underside of the body is ocher with dark spots. The face veil is pale yellowish brown. It is the only species of barn owl in its range.

It is a nocturnal owl that occurs mainly in open and semi-open landscapes. The species is monotypical and is considered a resident bird. Their food spectrum consists of mice and small rat species, bats, small birds, reptiles and frogs, insects and spiders. So far there is no evidence that it differs in its way of life from other barn owls.
