The Sint-Maarten Chapel

The Sint Maarten Kapel is a late Gothic reformed chapel in the Hoogelande farm near Grijpskerke in the Dutch municipality of Veere ( province of Zeeland ). It was originally the chancel of a medieval parish church, which was in ruins until 1964 .

history

The church ruin. State around 1900

The designation as the Sint Maarten Chapel is not based on a sacred building now consecrated to Martin von Tours , but on a memory of the destroyed predecessor church consecrated to the saint. The construction of the first chapel in Hoogelande is documented by a deed of foundation by Bishop Baldwin II from 1189. The chapel was a subsidiary of the Middelburg Westmünster Church, which was also consecrated to St. Martin. This was abandoned in 1575 in the course of the Reformation. In the 15th century the Hoogelander parish had grown so much that the larger new building of a late Gothic parish church was necessary. This was destroyed during the siege of Middelburg 1572–1574 during the Eighty Years' War except for the choir with the triumphal arch. The ruin has been artistically depicted several times, for example by Aart Schouman in 1754.

After the Second World War , considerations began to secure and restore the ruins as a chapel, which finally led to the current building in 1964–1965. The late Gothic choir was reconstructed and a roof turret was placed on the wall with the triumphal arch and the arch was closed with a large wooden portal. By closing the pointed arch with the portal, the optically misleading effect of a much smaller building results today for the west facade.
