history

around 1818

Documentary evidence of the construction of the chapel is missing. Due to the construction of the round-arched narrow windows of the apses, Erwin Poeschel suspects it was built around 1100. In 1420 the chapel was rebuilt under Abbot Peter; Among other things, the ceiling was renewed and the roof and the tower increased by the bell storey. Around 1700 two large square windows were installed on the north wall, which were walled up again for a renovation in 1979/80. 1992–94 the interior of the chapel was renovated.

The chapel is a late example of a single-nave hall church with three apses . In contrast, for example, to the three apses of the Church of Mistail , they are only designed as flat niches that are not visible on the outer wall and are only decorative.

Paintings

Martyrdom of St. Agatha

The paintings come from four stages:

The poorly preserved fresco cycle on the north wall with pictures from the life of St. Agatha dates from around 1430 to 1440; he was severely disturbed by the installation of the square windows. The unknown painter came from southern Germany.

The painting of the apses, the large adoration image and the protective mantle Madonna on the south side were made between 1450 and 1460 and were made by the Lombard painters Cristoforo and Nicolao da Seregno . In the middle apse Christ is depicted in the mandorla, in the right the coronation of Mary. In between, the saints Placidus and Ulrich von Augsburg stand under medallions of prophets.

The northern apse shows an Annunciation to Mary. It is signed in a window niche with “1616 HIG” and comes from the Grisons painter Hans Jakob Greutter.

The old frescoes from the 15th century on the north wall were painted over by Hans von Sumvitg in 1707 with pictures from the life of the saints. They were removed to reveal the original cycle. A small piece of it has been preserved above the picture “Agatha before the judge”.
