The Hubertuskapelle , also called the chapel on the Wilder Jäger , is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church in the Upper Bavarian community of Saulgrub . The chapel is consecrated to St. Hubertus of Lüttich , the patron saint of the hunters, and is subordinate to the curate church St. Anton in the Saulgruber parish of Altenau .

location

The chapel stands on the "Wild Jäger", an open space in the forest area on the northern slope of the Klammspitzkamm of the Ammergau Alps , near the Hengstbach, a tributary of the Halbammer . It stands in a loop in a meadow and is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. There is a hut near the chapel where forest workers used to sleep.

history

In the place of the chapel stood a royal house of Ludwig II. After its demolition, the concrete slab on which it stood was preserved. The foreman Jakob Alletse from Unterammergau erected a chapel on this concrete slab in 1902/03 as a thank you for having remained unharmed in 45 years while working in the forest in the Halbammer area. He wanted on the one hand to keep the memory of the former royal house alive and on the other hand to create a place for prayer for the forest workers, who often did not come home for weeks.

In 1962 the chapel was transferred to the Altenauer Trachtenverein, which has been responsible for the maintenance and care of the chapel ever since. In 1992 the chapel was fully restored through volunteer work .

Exterior

The chapel has a base area of around 3.5 × 5 meters and has a gable roof. A portico with six columns is presented to the chapel room. A semicircular relief in the pediment shows the scene in which Saint Hubert meets a deer with a crucifix in its antlers. The gable is crowned by a cross.

Interior

On the altar of the chapel there is a representation of Jesus as the Man of Sorrows . Next to it are figures of Saints Martin of Tours and Aloisius of Gonzaga , the Apostle James the Elder and Saint King Louis IX.
