location

St. Anton, north side

The church is located in the center of Altenau south of the Oberen Dorfstraße in the immediate vicinity of the school building and the village inn. Their orientation deviates from the ideal east by about 20 degrees to the north.

history

Altenau belonged to Unterammergau for a long time. There was only a small chapel in the village itself. As early as 1750 there were efforts to build their own church. However, it was not until 1845 to 1848 that the church building, which still exists today, was erected, and in 1852 it was consecrated.

In 1928 Altenau became an expositur and received its own pastor. In 1962 Altenau was appointed a curate together with Saulgrub , and in 1978 the curate was integrated into the Bad Kohlgrub parish association.

In 2009 the church was completely renovated. A folk altar , ambo and sediles were also re-erected.

architecture

St. Anton, east side

The building consists of three parts. A slightly drawn-in choir wing connects to the 1.90 meter long and 8.30 meter wide nave to the east . The nave and choir wing each have two window axes and share a gable roof . This is followed to the east by a bell tower with a square floor plan, the corners of which are bevelled in its upper part and which supports a pyramid-shaped tent roof . The spire is crowned with a cross . A small entrance porch with a pent roof is in front of the western end of the south facade . On the north side of the tower a door leads into the sacristy, which occupies the eastern part of the choir wing.

Inside, St. Anton is a single-nave hall church with a flat ceiling. The retracted choir bears a segmented arch vault and has a straight end (box choir), in the rear wall of which on both sides of the high altar a door leads into the sacristy behind. A wooden organ gallery extends along the back wall.

Furnishing

The main pieces of equipment are the high altar and the two inclined side altars from the middle of the 18th century, which are stylistically based on classicism . The high altar is bordered on both sides by a pair of columns, the side altars by one column each. The apostles Peter and Paul stand between the pairs of pillars of the main altar , the altarpiece shows Saint Anthony, to whom the baby Jesus appears in a vision . The baroque tabernacle was only erected here in 1966. In niches above the doors on the side of the high altar there is a statue of the plague saint Rochus of Montpellier on the left , and the apostle John on the right .

On the left side altar there is a statue of the Mother of God with Child, the altarpiece above shows Jesus and Mary with the dying Joseph . On the right side altar is a statue of Jesus pointing to his heart , above it is a Pietà in an altar niche . The three altarpieces end in a cornice , which is interrupted by the round end of the altarpiece at the high altar, and above which round arches rise that carry vases , garlands and putti .

The popular altar , ambo and sedile are made of wood in simple forms. A larger than life baroque crucifix hangs on the right side wall . Opposite him stands a statue of St. Martin of Tours on a pedestal . A way of the cross is hung along the side walls of the nave and choir. An organ with eight registers stands on the gallery at the back.
