History and architecture

In the 19th century, Catholics immigrated mainly as workers in copper slate mining in the Mansfeld mountain range , so that from the 1860s onwards, more and more churches were built in the towns and some villages. At that time the region belonged to the Catholic Archdiocese of Paderborn , whose cathedral and diocesan master builder Arnold Güldenpfennig designed the majority of the new churches for over 50 years. He also made a type design that provided for a parish and school house in place of the tower and that was implemented in various places in what was then the province of Saxony . The Catholic churches of Calbe (Saale), Eilsleben, Hecklingen and Unseburg can be traced back to Güldenpfennig's type design.

The church of Gerbstedt also corresponds to this type, because it consists of a neo-Gothic nave to which the parish and school house was attached at a right angle to the south. A square roof turret was inserted at the transition so that a bell carrier was not completely dispensed with. The retracted rectangular choir is due to the local conditions in the north, the nave has a transept. These are also typical elements for Güldenpfennig buildings. A clear assignment to architects can only be made with concrete evidence.

Construction of the church began on July 13, 1905 and ten months later it was consecrated on May 27, 1906 by Pastor Meintrup from Eisleben. The Paderborn bishop Wilhelm Schneider carried out the consecration on May 13th, 1908. The church not only served the approximately 340 Catholics of Gerbstedt for worship, but also an estimated 600 seasonal workers. After the Second World War , the number of parishioners skyrocketed to around 3,000 in 1946. The church and parsonage were rebuilt in 1964 and renovation was carried out in 1998. The church was later assigned to the re-established Catholic diocese of Magdeburg , in which it came to the community association of Mansfelder Land on January 28, 2007, in which it was again defeated at the end of 2010 to the parish of St. Georg Hettstedt. However, the profanation took place on September 2, 2016 . In 2018, the city took over the house of God to use it as a venue.

Interior and outfit

The interior is characterized by a flat wooden hollow ceiling and an organ gallery in the south. There was also a wooden figure of a saint from the late 15th century in the church.
