Martand Singh (born March 15, 1923 ; † November 20, 1995 in Rewa , Madhya Pradesh ), with full name "HH (His Highness - His Highness) Samrajya Maharajadhiraja Bandhresh Shri Maharaja Martand Singh Ju Deo Bahadur" was the 13th from 1946. and thus also the last Maharajah of the Indian princely state of Rewa , he also held the office of Rajpramukh (state-appointed governor) of Vindhya Pradesh , the amalgamation of several princely states in central India, from 1949 to 1950 . In contrast to his father, "Major-General HH Samrajya Maharajadhiraja Bandhresh Shri Maharaja Sir Ghulab Singh Ju Deo Bahadur", however, his prince status was no longer associated with real political power from the start. In 1971, the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also abolished all titles of nobility and thus deprived the former rulers of their last privileges.

Martand Singh then worked until 1989 as a simple MP for the constituency of Rewa in the Lok Sabha , the first chamber of the Indian Parliament , where he was committed to nature conservation and the fight against poaching. The founding of the Bandhavgarh National Park in the Vindhya Mountains goes back to his initiative.

The preservation of the rare species of the white tiger (a half-albino) native to Rewa was particularly important to him. Martand Singh even succeeded in breeding this breed in captivity for the first time with the tiger tomcat Mohan, captured in the jungle in 1951 . All of the white Bengal tigers living in zoos around the world or shown in show business ultimately trace their family tree back to this specimen.

As a philanthropist and donor, Martand Singh supported many social and medical institutions for needy and sick people. One of his main concerns was the establishment and further development of a modern infrastructure in his constituency.

In 1986, the Indian government awarded Martand Singh the Padma Bhushan , the third highest civilian award in the country, for his outstanding social commitment.
