Dedicated to the memory of Bishop Johannes Poggenburg and his family |
The Pietà Chapel is a neo-Gothic brick chapel in Ostbevern that was built in the 1930s . It is the memory of the 1862-born Ostbevern Bishop John Poggenburg dedicated and is since August 11, 1988, listed building .
description
The chapel is on Lienener Damm, the Brinkort, at the birthplace of Johannes Poggenburg, today's home in Ostbevern. The chapel is about three meters high and made of dark red brick . The building is covered by a simple gable roof.
There is a memorial plaque on one side wall of the chapel:
“In memory of Dr. Johannes Poggenburg, Bishop of Münster 1913–1933, Archbishop of Nikopsis, born in Ostbevern May 12, 1862, died May 5, 1933. "
In the chapel there is a 1.25 m high Pietà made of sandstone . It is probably a replica of the Telgter miraculous image and, like this, adorned with a crown on the head; also in this Pietà the right arm of Christ hangs almost perpendicular to the ground. A few deviating details indicate a version oriented towards the Baroque : the folds of the cloak are more lively and the facial expression of Mary is not distorted by pain. In addition, the Mother of God is adorned with additional votive offerings , such as a festive veil and a cloak.
history
The miraculous image probably comes from the Rengering monastery , which was dissolved in 1810. At first it stood free on a pedestal by the street where the annual hail procession passed. The Poggenburg family built the chapel around 1930.
After seven members of the Poggenburg family were killed in the bombing of Münster on October 10, 1943, a memorial plaque was placed in the chapel. In 1977 the memorial plaque for Bishop Poggenburg was moved there from the old parish church .
