Kapteyn is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the moon's front . It lies between the Langrenus craters in the west and La Pérouse in the east. The round rim of the crater is moderately eroded with traces of landslides. The interior has a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the Dutch astronomer Jacobus C. Kapteyn .
