The Cape Turtle ( Streptopelia capicola ), also called Gurrtaube , Kaplachtaube or Damara-Taube , is a species of pigeon native to southern and eastern Africa . It occurs there in nine subspecies. The species is common and is classified as not endangered by the IUCN . The captain dove is a very shouting species that can be heard not only throughout the day, but also on moonlit nights. Their calls are characteristic of the background noise of the East African dry bush.

Appearance and vocalizations

The Kapturt dove reaches a body length of 25 centimeters. It is significantly smaller than a laughing dove . The coloration is very similar to the wine-red turtle dove , but the Kapturt dove is a little grayer overall. Both sexes look the same, but the males are slightly larger.

Kapturtle doves have a flat head. The front head is light blue-gray. A narrow black stripe runs from the beak to the eye. The neck, abdomen and chest are mauve-pink, with the plumage on the chest and abdomen being more gray. The under tail-coverts are white. A black stripe runs along the back of the neck. The coat, the shoulders and the inner wing covers are dark gray-brown. The wings of the hand and the outer wing covers are matt black, the individual feathers are lined with light. The upper tail coverts are dark blue gray. The beak is straight and black. The iris is dark brown.

The call is a monotonously called cuk-crrrr-cuk cuk-crrrr-cuk for a long time . At the nesting site, the Cape pigeon also calls cuck-coo .

distribution and habitat

Southern Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, Mozambique and South Africa belong to the distribution area of ​​the Cape pigeon. It also occurs in Madagascar and the Comoros. Their range depends on the availability of water. There is an expansion of the distribution area in the regions in which irrigation systems are set up in otherwise dry areas.

The habitat of the Cape pigeon is open, arid land, which has loose vegetation on trees and bushes. It also settles agricultural land. It can be found in large numbers at water points.

The Cape Turtle is a resident bird. However, there are seasonal and regionally limited hikes in the rainy season. Kapturtle doves mainly eat seeds; but there is also evidence that they eat winged termites, and presumably other small invertebrates are also part of their diet.

Reproduction is not tied to any season, nests with eggs can be found all year round. The clutch consists of two white-shelled eggs. The incubation period is 12 days, the nestling period 16 to 17 days.
