The Capuchin Monastery of Würzburg is a former monastery of the Capuchins in Würzburg in Bavaria in the Diocese of Würzburg .

history

The monastery consecrated to St. Kilian and St. Franziskus in today's Kapuzinerstraße was founded in 1615 by Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , Bishop of Würzburg. It was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization .

The Capuchin Convent in Würzburg last resided on Nikolausberg in the former hospice at the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , which is generally known as Käppele and was built in 1748 in Baroque style by Balthasar Neumann . There he was in charge of the pilgrimage there from 1749 . In contrast to the monastery in the city center, which was dissolved in 1803, the Capuchins on the Käppele (as well as three other mendicant order monasteries in Würzburg) were spared from secularization. In March 2014 it became known that the Capuchins, after 260 years, would leave the Käppele in mid-October of the same year. On October 19, the three remaining Capuchins said goodbye to the Käppele with a festive service. . Since then, the diocese of Würzburg has been taking care of the monastery and the pilgrims and has also made it suitable for the disabled.
