Karahan ( Turkish for black hostel ) is a village in Muradiye district in the Turkish province of Van . It is located on the northeast bank of Lake Van at the mouth of the Bendimahi Çay River .
Two rock inscriptions of the Urartian ruler Menua were found in Karahan . They are executed in Assyrian cuneiform . Both inscriptions are damaged, of the second (No. 43 near Harutjunjan) only the standardized curse formula has been preserved. The inscription tells of the construction of a tower temple ( susi ) and a fortress on virgin land ("nothing was built here"). Menua also planted wings and fruit gardens. The fortress was named Arzuniuli. In addition to the imperial god Ḫaldi , the inscription also mentions the god Ua, perhaps a local deity.
