The Karche dam , also Karkheh dam ( Persian سد کرخه, DMG Sadd-e Karḫe ), is a large multi-purpose dam on the Karche River in Iran , which was built in 2001 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard .
Building
The dam is on Karche in the southwestern province of Chuzestan ; the nearest town to the east is Andimeschk . The reservoir has a storage capacity of 5.9 billion cubic meters. The purpose of the dam is to irrigate 320,000 hectares of land, produce 520 MW (3 × 140 MW) and electrical power from hydropower , and protect the lower reaches from flooding. 934 GWh of electrical energy can be generated annually .
The dam , a rubble dam with an earth core , is 127 m high, 3030 m long, 1100 m at the base and 12 m wide at the top of the dam. It cost the equivalent of $ 700 million to build.
Planning and construction
1956 began the planning for the dam by an American company called "Development and Resources Corporation". In 1990 the final plans were finalized by the consulting engineering firm Mahab Ghodss. The engineering department of the Revolutionary Guards started construction in 1992 and finished it in 2001. During the construction work, 120 contract partners and over eight consulting firms were active. 5,000 construction workers were involved and 40 of them died in accidents.
