The Karche (also Karkhe (h) , Persian کرخه Karche , DMG Karḫe ; Arabic الكرخة al-Karcha , DMG al-Karḫa ) is a river in Iran .

The Karche arises in the Zāgros Mountains near the city of Pol-e Dochtar from the source rivers Kaschkan and Seymare . It flows through the province of Khuzestan , runs in the plain near the old city of Susa about 100 km parallel to the river Dez and drains to the west into the Hawizeh swamps , which extend on both sides of the Iranian-Iraqi border. Due to the large amount of water being withdrawn and due to the extensive drying up of the Mesopotamian Marshes , the Karche only reaches the Tigris during strong spring floods , where it joins the Euphrates to form the Shatt al-Arab .

The Karche is already mentioned in the Bible and has the name Ulai (Hebrew: אולי). From the time of the Achaemenids Herodotus reports about a river which he calls Choaspes , that the Persian great king Cyrus only drinks water from this river and therefore always carries many silver barrels filled with boiled Choaspes water with him when traveling. Today the river is best known for the Karche dam and power station.
