description

On the 53.4 cm × 40.2 cm painting, Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg is shown in front of a dark green curtain as a half-figure from the right side. He presents himself in a splendid brocade cloak interwoven with gold, as shown on numerous depictions of saints from the Cranach school. The red biretta on his head identifies the person as a cardinal. On his crossed hands he wears at least 14 jewelry rings, including a coat of arms ring , which with the double quartered coat of arms refers to the Treaty of Grimnitz , which was concluded in 1529 . This suggests that the painting was made after 1529. The clearly aged facial features of the cardinal also speak for this, although Cranach's workshop used a prototype developed around 1525 in the form of a template for depictions of him . Albrecht von Brandenburg shows his characteristic physiognomy with a large face, a small, sullen mouth, bags under the eyes and a long nose.

It is believed that the portrait is not from Cranach, but from his pupil Simon Franck , who was court painter to Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg.

The picture comes from the altar cycle for the Berlin city church. It was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1908. Today it is owned by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg .
