Simon Franck

Simon Franck , Simon von Aschaffenburg , master of the Gregors masses , also known as pseudo-Grünewald (born around 1500; died 1546 or 1547 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German painter who worked for Lucas Cranach 's workshop and especially created Christian motifs. He is considered to be the creator of the Passion Cycle in Halle .

Act

Franck's style suggests that he completed his training in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder. The portraits ascribed to him show “a pronounced preference for a delicacy in the depiction, particularly recognizable from the filigree ornamentation , for example in the depicted robes”. One feature is the use of a cool color palette . His appointment as court painter is not guaranteed, as no evidence of payment could be proven. That he worked for the cardinal, however, testify to the orders he carried out for Albrecht von Brandenburg in his residence in Halle and that he later followed him to Aschaffenburg. Since August 17, 1540, he and his wife had owned a house with land there, which was given to him by the monastery in Aschaffenburg on favorable terms.

The works ascribed to him include the colorful altarpiece with inactive leaves in the Marktkirche in Halle . It is a panel painting on wood, which consists of two movable pairs of wings and a predella . There is evidence that Franck had worked for Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg since 1529 and had acquired citizenship in Halle. He left the city with the cardinal and died in Aschaffenburg in 1546/47. His main work is the cycle of saints and passions, which he is said to have created for the church of the New Abbey, today's cathedral, based on designs by Cranach.

He also produced designs for sculptors, goldsmiths and carpenters, was in charge of furnishing the Moritzburg from 1531 to 1532 and was responsible for transporting the art collection when the cardinal moved from Halle to Aschaffenburg in 1539/40. In Aschaffenburg he was entrusted with the construction management of the beguinage in the zoo.

Pseudo-Grünewald

Matthias Grünewald (St. Erasmus and Mauritius, 1520 to 1524)

The so-called pseudo-Grünewald (not the real Matthias Grünewald ) was a painter who added the side wings to the picture of “St. Erasmus and Mauritius ”is said to have created. At that time he was also working in Aschaffenburg. Since the wing portraits do not stylistically match the middle section, but rather are attributed to the Lucas Cranach school, it is assumed that the pseudo-Grünewald was either Lucas Cranach the Younger or, because of the softer forms, came from one of his students, as the Portraits do not have the signature typical of Cranach. Since many of the works of the pseudo-Grünewald were located in Aschaffenburg, the Kurdish Archbishop of Mainz, Albrecht von Brandenburg, is regarded as the client. The pseudo-Grünewald is identified as the painter Simon von Aschaffenburg, who worked for him at this time.
