Karel Andel

Karel Anděl (born December 28, 1884 , † March 17, 1947 in Prague ) was a Czech selenographer and co-founder of the Czech Astronomical Society ( Česká astronomická společnost ).

Life

Karel Anděl was originally a teacher who devoted his free time to astronomy. His focus was on the moon, which he observed and mapped. Before the Second World War he was one of the most important Czech astronomers with a worldwide reputation. In his honor, the International Astronomical Union named a crater 35 kilometers in diameter after him on the Earth-facing side of the moon . The crew of the Apollo 16 mission landed not far from this crater . The asteroid (22465) Karelandel is also named after him.
