Karel Farský (born July 26, 1880 in Škodějov near Semily , Bohemia ; † June 12, 1927 in Prague ) was a Czech Roman Catholic priest and in 1920 the founder and first patriarch of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church .

Life

Karel Farský was the son of František Farský and his wife Johanna, née Bochova. He attended elementary school in Roprachtice and then the Academic Gymnasium in Prague, where he graduated in 1900 . From 1900–1904 he studied at the theological faculty of Charles University in Prague and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1904 . From 1904 to 1906 he worked as a chaplain in Ostrov nad Ohří (Schlackenwerth) , after which he worked as a research assistant at the University of Prague. Karel Farský was on 4 December 1909 with a dissertation on De Divinatione et magia in Sancta Scriptura (About divination and magic in Scripture) for doctor of theology doctorate . He then worked from 1910 to 1914 as a religion teacher at the 1st and 2nd grammar schools in Prague, then from 1914 to 1919 at the II grammar school in Pilsen .

After a conflict over his membership and the chairmanship of the priestly association Jednota ("Unity") and its radical wing Ohnisko ("Focal Point"), which in the anti-modernism dispute represented ideas of what was called modernism by the internal church opponents , Farský left Pilsen and found a job in Church Secretariat of the Czechoslovak Ministry of Education. On January 8, 1920, he founded the Czechoslovak Church , which has been called the Czechoslovak Hussite Church since 1971 , as an episcopal and national church. The church received state recognition on September 15, 1920. Karel Farský was chairman of the church leadership in the early days and was elected Bishop of West Bohemia and Patriarch of the Church by the first ordinary congress in 1924 .
