Karel Rüütli (born December 25, 1978 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . From November 2008 to mid-2010 he was party chairman of the Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ). Rüütli is now a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party .

Life and political career

Karel Rüütli graduated from high school in Valga in 1997 . Until 2004 he studied forestry at the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences ( Eesti Maaülikool ) in Tartu.

In 2001 Rüütli joined the Estonian People's Union and has been represented on the party council since 2002. Between 2001 and 2003 he was a member of the board of the party's youth organization ("Rahvaliidu Noored"). From 2005 to 2008 he was one of the deputies of the party chairman.

From 2005 to 2007 Karel Rüütli was a consultant in the Estonian Ministry of Environment. At the same time he was elected to the Tartu City Council for the Estonian People's Union from 2005 to 2007. During this time he joined the Association of Estonian Cities ( Eesti Linnade Liit ) as a member. Rüütli was also represented on numerous supervisory boards: from 2003 to 2007 at AS Eesti Loto , from 2005 to 2007 in the administration of the state forest areas ( Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus ) and from 2005 to 2007 at the Tartu waterworks ( AS Tartu Veevärk ).

From 2007 Rüütli was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). He was group leader of the Estonian People's Union. Rüütli specialized in education, data protection and civil surveillance by state bodies. He sits on the Culture Committee and the Monitoring Committee. On November 1, 2008, he succeeded Jaanus Marrandi as party leader of the Estonian People's Union. He was the youngest leader of a party that was represented in the Estonian Parliament. Under his leadership, the discussion about a possible unification of the People's Union with the Estonian Social Democrats divided the leadership and membership of the party. In the 2009 European elections , the party received only 2.2% of the vote. She has not been represented in parliament since 2011.

In July 2010, Rüütli was replaced by Juhan Aare as party chairman. Rüütli then left the People's Union and joined the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE). For the SDE, he was elected as a member of the Riigikogu in the 2011 parliamentary election.

Memberships

Karel Rüütli is a member of the Union of Former Forest Students, Alumni of the Union of Estonian Students, active in the Association of Alumni of the Valga High School and sits on the supervisory board of the "Heino Teder" forest training center. He began his active social life early on as chairman of the school board of his school. From 2000 to 2002 he was the deputy chairman of the board of the Association of Students of the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences . He was later also elected to the board of the Union of Estonian Students.

Private life

Today Karel Rüütli lives with his partner Merylin. The couple have two sons and a daughter.
