Karel van Wolferen

Karel van Wolferen (* 1941 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch journalist, publicist and university professor.

Life

After graduating from school, van Wolferen left the Netherlands in 1960, toured the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia and began his journalistic work. Since 1962 he worked as an English teacher in Japan , including at Waseda University . In 1972 he became the East Asia correspondent for the NRC Handelsblad and wrote about political and social developments in Japan, India , Thailand , Vietnam , the Philippines and South Korea . In 1987 van Wolferen received the Prijs voor de Dagbladjournalistiek , a Dutch journalism award . His extensive work on politics and society in Japan was published in 1989 under the title The Enigma of Japanese Power (German: On the Myth of the Invincible: Notes on the World Power of Japan ).

From 1997 to 2006 van Wolferen was univeristeitshoogleraar at the Institute of Comparative Political and Economic Institutions at the University of Amsterdam .

Positions

Van Wolferen has rejected the global political role of the USA since the 1990s and criticized - especially in the Ukraine crisis - the lack of objectivity and independence of European countries and the alignment of the media in their adaptation to the political goals of the USA.
