Karesuvanto [ ˈkɑrɛsuvɑntɔ ] ( Finnish also: Kaaresuvanto ; Swedish Karesuvanto , North Sami Gárasavvon ) is a village in the municipality of Enontekiö in Finnish Lapland with around 140 inhabitants. Karesuvanto is located on the banks of the Finnish- Swedish border river Muonionjoki on State Road 21 , which is also European Route 8 , 110 kilometers south of Kilpisjärvi and 88 kilometers north of Muonio in northwest Finland . On the opposite Swedish side is the place of the same name Karesuando . The two places have been linked by a bridge since 1980. The two villages together have 450 inhabitants.

history

According to tradition, Karesuvanto is said to have been founded in 1673 by the new settlers Matti Martinpoika and Niilo Niilonpoika Niva. Karesuvanto was burned down by German troops during the Lapland War in 1944 and rebuilt after the war. The main livelihood of the villagers today is tourism, alongside reindeer herding .
