Marengo department
Marengo is a former French department .
The name is derived from the battle of Marengo (a suburb of Alessandria ) in 1800.
It was founded on September 11, 1801 from parts of the annexed Piedmont and existed until 1814. Today, the area belongs to the provinces of Alessandria and Asti .
There were three arrondissements with the following cantons:
- Alessandria: Felizzano , Valenza , Castellazzo , Cassine , Sezzé , Bosco ,
- Asti: Cocconato , Castelnuovo , Montafia , Villanova d'Asti , Montechiaro , Tigliole , San Damiano , Portacomaro , Rocca d'Arazzo , Costigliole , Mombercelli , Canelli ,
- Casale: Gabiano , Moncalvo , Pontestura , Rosignano , Ticineto , Montemagno , San Salvatore .
