Karim Amer

Karim Amer is an Egyptian film producer .

Karim Amer comes from a conservative Egyptian family. He studied economics and political science at New York University . After co-producing Mette Heide's film Rafea: Solar Mama in 2012 , Al midan ( The Square ) became his first independent production a year later, directed by Jehane Noujaim . The documentary film about the first 18 days of the 2011 protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square , which had problems with censorship in Egypt, was an international success. As the first Egyptian production ever, the film was nominated for an Oscar . At the 2014 awards, however, it was defeated by competitor 20 Feet from Stardom in the Best Documentary Film category , and at the 2014 Emmy Awards against American Experience . He was able to win at the Dubai International Film Festival as well as the prize for the best feature film from the International Documentary Association . The film was followed by a second joint work with director Jehane Noujaim, a documentary about the hacker attacks on Sony in 2011 .
