Karl-Heinz Förster (born March 9, 1938 in Schwerin ; † January 29, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German mathematician .

Karl-Heinz Förster studied for two years at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and then from 1958 at the Free University of Berlin , where he graduated in 1962. Karl-Heinz Förster received his doctorate in 1966 from the Free University of Berlin under Helmut Pachale (dissertation: linear, closed operators that analytically depend on a parameter ). In July 1969 he completed his habilitation there (habilitation thesis: About the distance between the spectra of limited, linear operators in Hausdorff metrics and perturbation metrics for limited, linear operators ). He taught at the universities in Dortmund and Oldenburg (full professor in 1973) and from 1977 at the TU Berlin.

Karl-Heinz Förster dealt with functional analysis and operator theory and founded a school of operator theory at the TU Berlin. At his chair, he supervised more than 13 doctoral theses and habilitation theses. In this environment (together with Peter Jonas, later also with Jussi Behrndt, Christian Mehl, Carsten Trunk and Henrik Winkler) the workshop series Krein Spaces and Applications was created from 2001 to 2008 . This culminated in the organization of the 21st International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications in 2010 with 370 participants at the TU Berlin.

Karl-Heinz Förster had long-term scientific contacts in Israel and Hungary. Since 1995 he has been a member of the editorial committee of the journal Functional Differential Equations and he was founding president of the specialist committee for applied operator theory of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM).

Karl-Heinz Förster researched, among other things, the spectral theory of polynomials of matrices and operators and the theory of Fredholm operators and Perron-Frobenius operators and operator theory in open spaces .
