Karl-Heinz Jöckel

Karl-Heinz Jöckel (born November 16, 1953 in Hiltrup ) is a German epidemiologist and university professor .

Life

Karl-Heinz Jöckel studied mathematics and business administration in Münster until 1977. He then worked as a research assistant in the statistics department at the University of Dortmund. After graduating as Dr. rer. nat. with Joachim Hartung in Dortmund 1982 (dissertation: Properties and effective applications of Monte Carlo tests ) he became head of the biometrics and IT department at the Bremen Institute for Prevention Research and Social Medicine (BIPS), where he was also deputy head of the institute from 1985. In 1989 he qualified as a professor in the field of "Applied Statistics" at the Statistics Department at the University of Dortmund. In 1993 he was appointed professor for "Biometrics with a focus on methodological aspects of biometrics, mathematical-statistical and numerical methods" at the Department of Mathematics / Computer Science at the University of Bremen . In 1994 he was appointed Professor of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (IMIBE) at the Medical Faculty of the University of Essen (C4) and head of the institute there. He was also Vice-Rector  for Quality Management at the University of GH Essen (2001–2002),  Rector of  the University of GH Essen (2002) and Dean of  the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen for two terms (2004–2008). Since 2006 he has been Chairman of the Board of the Essen University Medicine Foundation . Between 2012 and 2017 he was chairman of the National Cohort eV

Karl-Heinz Jöckel has been Managing Director of the Institute for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology at the University Medical Center in Essen since 1994 .

Memberships

Jöckel is or was a member of numerous specialist societies and expert committees, including chairman of the Joint Scientific Advisory Board (GWB) of the Federal Ministry of Health. He is currently a member of the Radiation Protection Commission (SSK) and the Medical Expert Group for Occupational Diseases.

  • 1997 to 1999 President of the German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS). In 2009 he hosted the GMDS conference in Essen.

Honor

In 2018, Clarivate Analytics ranked him among the 1% most cited scientists.
