The Essen University Medicine Foundation was founded on June 22nd, 2006 and is based in Essen . The purpose of the foundation is to ensure innovative research and teaching as well as health care that goes beyond basic medical care.

The founding professors of the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University Medical Center Essen laid the foundation for the foundation with a personal financial contribution. Since it was founded, more than 6 million euros have been made available for funding projects.

The foundation is managed by a board of directors chaired by Karl-Heinz Jöckel . Also represented on the board are Ursula Felderhoff-Müser (Director of Children's Clinic I at the University Hospital Essen) and Thorsten Kaatze (Commercial Director at the University Hospital Essen). A board of trustees chaired by Klaus Trützschler and a scientific advisory board support and monitor the foundation's work. Jorit Ness has been the managing director since September 2012.

The aim of the foundation is to implement plans and projects that go beyond the medically necessary basic care. This is intended to help sick people even more effectively; improved research conditions should help to cure diseases and medical students should be enabled to become the highly qualified doctors of tomorrow. The foundation needs supporters to finance the various projects. Many sick people have already benefited from various donations and sponsorship contributions.

Health care

Shuttle bus project: Allows patients to be transported free of charge to the Essen University Clinic and the various wards or an outpatient appointment

The foundation supports various projects in the field of health care, including projects for sick and seriously ill children: visits to the clinic clowns, art and music therapy offers, participation in school lessons from the bedside or "pearls of encouragement" for the little cancer patients. The foundation also supports the “Frühstart” / Bunter Kreis parent counseling service, which is committed to pre- and post-operative care for premature children. In addition, training courses on care in the home environment are organized for family members of chronically ill relatives.

The foundation is also supporting the new construction of the children's clinic at the University Clinic in Essen: the new building will provide space for up to 150 children and young people on 10,000 square meters and combine all pediatric disciplines under one roof.

The “Innovation OP of the Future: Head and Neck Surgery 2025” project, which is to be implemented as part of the expansion of the ENT clinic, is co-sponsored by the foundation.

Teaching

To improve the training of doctors, the foundation supports u. a. Scholarships for students of the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The University Medicine Foundation has provided scholarships as part of the Germany Scholarship Program since 2008 . Through the federal and state scholarship program, committed students receive a financial grant of € 300 per month. Half of the funding is provided by private donors and half by public funds. In addition, the foundation supports the simulation patient program, in which professional actors prepare budding medical professionals in a practical manner for acting independently and dealing with patients with empathy.

research

In the area of ​​research, both clinical and scientific basic research is funded. A funded project in the field of transplantation research deals with an innovative conservation method to improve the later functionality of donor livers during organ transplants. Another research project supported by the foundation is a study on bone health in children with cancer in order to minimize the risk of long-term effects from cancer therapy in children. In addition, the foundation is involved in a study on the early detection of dementia processes. The aim of the study is to stabilize and improve the cognitive performance of those affected.

Events and activities

Essen prevention event

The foundation has been inviting people to the Essen pension event once a year since 2014. Visitors receive information on the subjects living will , durable power of attorney and wills.

Emergency ID

In order to improve care in emergencies, the foundation and local cooperation partners issued an emergency ID card in November 2014, which can also be used outside of Essen.

Medicine award

In 2013, the foundation launched a medical prize in the categories of research, teaching and health care, which is awarded every two years to innovative projects at the Essen University Medical Center. The cumulative prize money in the first two years amounts to 300,000 euros. So far, 13 projects have been recognized that make an important contribution beyond basic medical care.

Hermann Seippel Prize - German Research Prize for Pediatrics

The aim of the research award, which is advertised throughout Germany, is to fight diseases in children and adolescents in the long term, to improve the living conditions of young patients and, where possible, to save lives by creating even better research conditions in pediatrics. The award is aimed at researchers from medical faculties and promotes research networking.

  • A total of 1 million euros for research in the field of paediatrics
  • Provision of 200,000 euros each in a two-year cycle until 2026
