Karl Marx grant

The Karl Marx scholarship was a special scholarship that was awarded in the GDR as a distinction to technically outstanding students who were ideologically loyal to the ideology and were awarded to recipients instead of basic and merit scholarships.

The Karl Marx scholarship has been awarded in the GDR since 1953, the details of which were explained in the ordinance on awarding the Karl Marx scholarship to students of universities and colleges of April 30, 1953 . The § 1 states:

[...] the highest award for students [...] for outstanding achievements and special successes in the acquisition of Marxism-Leninism and its application in specialist studies. When making the selection, particular attention should be paid to the fact that only those students are suggested who actively acquire Marxism-Leninism and are capable of creative work.

A comparatively high amount of money of 450 marks per month was associated with the scholarship, the normal basic scholarships had an amount of 190 marks. In 1981 the amount was 550 marks, for the basic scholarship 200 marks, in Berlin the basic scholarship received 15 marks more. The Karl Marx scholarship was only awarded comparatively rarely, only 100 people were entitled to it at the same time. It ranged from the granting to the end of the course. In addition, the Wilhelm Pieck grant (500 M per month, as of 1981) and the Johannes R. Becher grant (450 M per month, as of 1981) were awarded.

The scholars included the historians Gerhard Powik (1953), Harry Pawula (1956), Heinz Kathe (1964), Matthias Springer (1964) and Götz Dieckmann (1965). Harald Schliwa (1963), Walter Purkert (1966), Ulrich Busch (1973), Andreas Trunschke (1982), Lothar Bisky , Felix Strehober and Jack Barsky , at that time still under his real name Albrecht Dittrich, received the scholarship .
