Karl David Uitti

Karl David Uitti (born December 10, 1933 , † November 11, 2003 ) was an American Romanist and Medievalist .

life and work

Uitti studied at the University of California, Berkeley , wrote the master's thesis Conceptions of pure poetry in French and English from Poe to Yeats and Valéry in 1953 and received his doctorate in 1959 with the work Pensée et création littéraires dans l'oeuvre de Remy de Gourmont (published ad title: La Passion littéraire de Remy de Gourmont , Princeton / Paris 1962). In 1959 he went to Princeton University and stayed there until his death (from 1972 to 1978 as Chair of the Department of Romance Languages ​​and Literatures, then as Professor of French and Italian and John Woodhull Professor of Modern Languages). He directed the computerization of the Lancelot manuscripts (Charrette project).

Uitti was editor of the "Edward C. Armstrong Monographs on Medieval Literature" (from 1979) and co-editor of the magazines French Forum and Romance Philology .
